In Quarter 1 of 2022, we supported the SPCA of Solano County, located right here in Vacaville. Beyond supply and financial donations, they needed some onsite help and we were happy for the opportunity to assist!
Beyond donations, the SPCA needed help building an enclosed dog run that would provide a place for all of their dogs to get out and safely stretch their legs. They already had most of the materials, but needed volunteer time to pull it all together.
Luckily, three of our members were perfectly suited to manage this project:
Building the Dog Run
Planning the Project
Jose Govea, Aaron Lambert, and Jason Swenson worked together to make this project happen. After several site visits, they were able to figure out what materials had already been donated, what else was needed, and coordinated how we could get it done. With this information we recruited some additional help.
Next Steps
The first thing we needed to do was set the poles for the enclosure. But before that, we needed to be sure we could dig! This is where Karlie Ocenasek, our property manager, stepped up and made sure we could dig where we needed to without running into any issues.
Additional Materials
As with any project, there were a few additional items we needed. Luckily, Aaron Lambert, our contractor, was able to work with our local Home Depot in Fairfield who graciously donated the remainder of the materials we needed, just under $1,000 worth, to finish this project.
Digging Holes & Setting Poles
Anyone who has ever dug a post hole knows how much work it is! Luckily, our dentist, Dr. Abrew, had a tractor with an auger he was willing to bring onsite to make quick work of digging all the holes we needed. Once this was done, Aaron Lambert, Jose Govea, Jason Swenson and Anthony Perez set all the poles in concrete to make sure they would stay secure for years to come.
Fencing
With all the poles fully set, Jose Govea, Aaron Lambert, Jason Swenson, Chris Taylor, Wendy Howell, and Dr. Abrew came back to fasten the fencing, install the gate, and secure the bottom of the fencing so none of the dogs could work their way under it.
Dedication
With the enclosure built, many additional members came to commemorate this project. These include George Kalis, John McFadden, Karlie Ocenasek, Brittany Tapparo, and Marc DeContreaus, who generously had a dedication sign created for us. Lastly, special thanks to Brittany Tapparo and Anthony Perez who took pictures of this project throughout!
